Are RV dump stations open in winter?

Quick answer: Many are not. Dump stations at rest areas, state parks, and campgrounds in cold states often close for the season to keep pipes from freezing, while truck stops, travel centers, and some city stations stay open. Call ahead, dump in the warmest part of the day, and empty your tanks before you winterize.

This site lists 1,589 US dump stations from an OpenStreetMap snapshot (July 15, 2026). Only 36 of them include any opening hours, so for most stations the map cannot tell you whether they close for winter. Use this guide to judge which ones are likely to be open, and confirm before you go.

Where are the most dump stations for winter travel?

If you head south for the winter, these warm-weather states have the most listings on this site:

You can also see the stations along the planned cross-country route, which heads down I-95 to Florida and west along the Gulf in late 2026.

How do you dump RV tanks in freezing weather?

  1. Pick the warmest hour. Midday sun can thaw a stiff valve or hose.
  2. Keep tanks from freezing on the way. Use tank heaters if your RV has them, and keep the furnace running if the underbelly is heated.
  3. Connect, dump black first, then gray, as in the step-by-step dumping guide.
  4. Drain the hose completely and store it dry. Water left in a sewer hose freezes and cracks it.
  5. Do not leave the sewer hose connected overnight at a campsite in freezing weather. Close the valves and connect only when you dump.

What should you do with your tanks before winterizing?

  1. Dump the black tank, then the gray tank, at a station or full-hookup site.
  2. Rinse the black tank with a tank flush or wand until it runs clear.
  3. Drain the fresh tank, the water heater, and the low-point drains.
  4. Blow out the lines or pump RV antifreeze through them, following your RV's manual.
  5. Pour a little RV antifreeze into each drain and the toilet so the traps and valves do not freeze.

Rules and the right steps vary by RV, so your owner's manual comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Are RV dump stations open in winter?

Some are and many are not. Rest-area, state park, and campground dump stations in cold states often close from about October or November until spring to keep pipes from freezing. Truck stops, travel centers, and city-run stations are more likely to stay open, but confirm before you drive there.

Can you dump RV tanks when it is below freezing?

Yes, if the station is open and your valves and sewer hose are not frozen. Dump in the warmest part of the day, keep the hose short and drained, and do not leave it connected overnight.

Should I dump my tanks before winterizing my RV?

Yes. Empty and rinse the black and gray tanks before you winterize, then open the low-point drains, drain the water heater, and add RV antifreeze to the drains and traps so leftover water cannot freeze and crack fittings.

How do I know if a dump station on this site is seasonal?

Very few listings include opening hours, because OpenStreetMap only shows hours when a mapper added them. Most stations have no hours listed, which does not mean they are open year-round. Call ahead in winter, and report any seasonal closure you find.

Where is the easiest place to dump RV tanks in winter?

Warm-weather states usually have the most open options. Check the state pages for Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California, the 24-hour and truck stop lists, and campgrounds that sell a dump to non-guests.
